The Neon Spider revisited by JesIdres The Neon Spider revisited by JesIdres
One of the first original characters I posted here on deviantart was a superhero/fantastical creature known as Neon Spider. She was a culmunation of my growing reinterest in western comics (namely Nightwing and the DC universe) and the new series of Ghost in the Shell (The Stand Alone Complex series, still one of my favorite animes).

I began redesigning her under my artist block that started 2 weeks ago (Sorry, everyone!) As she was sketched, she gained a compatriot, but he has yet to surface as anything more than a rough sketch on looseleaf: Japanese Rock band lionesque hair, and sleeves that spiral out into manipulated fabric (think House of Flying daggers style manipulation, but at the sleeve ends and not from the side.

But she came back in a whole new way. Gone is the urban soldier look, in its place a sleeker, sexier look, with her name not only coming from her mysterious glowing fibers, but symbol on her outfit- eight legs of a neon spider. Also, my glowing technique is a lot better- partially helped by a tablet and better photoshop control. This is part of the reason I hesitate to upgrade just yet (probably when I can afford a new computer system).

The pose gives a greater understanding on the character herself, how dependant she is on her web. While I'm pretty sure the girl started as a superhero in my mind, I now see her as someone who only looks out for herself- cradling her desires in her glowing threads. Not a single bit of her is touching a solid surface, and with a twist of her fingers and figure, she'd stand on her threads and walk across the midnight sky.

Her threads fade into nothing after an hour or so, so her path can be seen behind her as she dangles in her urban jungle.

Yup officially nuts- and this stupid artblock is crushing my fingers!

Who would like to see this in wallpaper format?

I really like the concept and design of NS. Very cool. It reminds me and kinda inspires me to work on my glow photoshop effect. That of which I don't really have. XD

Nice! I can imagine her being hired by Lex Luthor or the like - not because she's inherently bad, but because, as you said, she looks out for herself (and these supervillains are hardly frugal) and she'd probably like getting one over on a superhero.

Yeah...the show that ate my brain- Ghost in the Shell, has a lot of technogothic hidden in its fashion. *cuddles her Twatterby*

It's very pretty, although I wouldn't want to be someone walking around in that kind of stuff all day long...

Oh, definately. My god, think of the wedgie! But fashion follows bizarre paths, and who knows what they'd want us to do in the future. (Images the doctor who episode with poor snot with a hole in his head).

EEH. Yes. But that was his own stupid fault. Imagine explaining that to your poor, dear mum...

That is a really cool picture and the character has good potential - my recent bitterness towards superheroes, who I could never care for very passionately, notwithstanding. A character who mainly looks after herself seems both more likely and more attractive than a do-gooder.

The outfit looks very nice, with the glowy lines, but I like her headgear, hairdo and make-up much better. Because, damn, I just... okay, this is my superhero bitterness talking, but who goes around dressed in a glowy swimsuit? It's the style before purpose effect...

Yeah, I know. THat's why, the more I think of her, I think of her as someone who just swings around for fun as an urban legend. Though the idea of a guy being in a completely black room when the blue glow show up behind him. And well, she's an exhibitionist, so thus a costume that could slip off at any given time.

Or maybe she's just a neogoth with an urge to be seen.

Or maybe Tron secretly invaded my head.

Most superhero costumes are a mockery. Underwear on the outside? It's like a call for a Nutshot! I liked Nightwing's costume because it was functional- and, yes, shows off his fabulous ass. But supergirl is just asking for a Sailormoon panty shot debacle ala Sailor Moon.

It's so much easier being a neogoth when you've got a glowy web! :D It does look cool - fit for clubbing or crimefightin'!

*giggle* When it comes to superhero costumes, I kind of like Spiderman's. It's more freaky than ridiculous (and patriotic!). And Black Cat had this ridiculously low-cut one that... okay, I didn't object to at all. Heh. But, let's just say, I'm glad they didn't go with yellow spandex in the X-Men movies.

I think Supergirl wears superhorts under her supershort superskirt, kinda like those girls' gym class outfits we know from manga, only spanking red.

Oh! And Harley. You gotta like Harley's outfit. Again, more freaky than just ridiculous.

I used to think Captain America and Wonder Woman were the worst. At least Spiderman's outfit was only guardedly patriotic.

What's even more amusing is WonderWoman is supposed to be from a different country, not america. And Captain America just-ergh. I have to say I like the idea of superheroes in street combat clothes than spandex. Give me workboots with steel toes and a pair of serious denim, (and my set of japanese swords) and we are set.

I know, I always used to think she was a female pro wrestler who got superpowers, left the ring but kept her outfit. Then I heard her origin story and was all "And THEN she became a pro wrestler, right?"

See, workboots and denim are sexy on a hero.

I totally love the outfit. It really ties in with the neon spider theme...
