Artist's Comments

The HistoryMonkey feels the need to have a few choice words with Mr. Dan Brown on his mangling of history and art history in his book, the DaVinci Code.

Now, why would the HistoryMonkey care? There are lot books with historical inaccuracies. Yes, but most of these books have not inspired of idiot hordes that have read the book to waste poor museum educators and guides with badly formed art history conspiracy theories and filled their head with a very WRONG perception of science, magic and religion during the Renaissance.

So yes, the HistoryMonkey decided to make sure that it doesn't happen again, and Mr. Brown learns the error of his ways.

And then my friends who work as a literature T.A. and editor would also to teach Mr Brown some finer points of writing....

Look, if you want a much more historically accurate book that better captures the medieval perspective, read The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. It's not perfect, but it's a lot damn better than the DaVinci Code.

And the movie has Sean Connery and Christian Slater, who are a lot easier on the eyes that mullet!Tom Hanks.

*considers pelting Voltaire for causing this mess in the first place, but is too lazy at the moment*

Now, hey. I love the DaVinci Code. For a while, Angels and Demons were my favourite books. But honestly, I don't know why people think they suddenly know all about history and religion when they read it. I personally take all the information in Dan's books with a grain of salt. History is to be learned from history books, not religious fiction.

And you're right. Tom Hanks was one of the worst castings ever for Langdon. But Ian McKellan was admittedly awesome for Teabing.

Also Dan's from Phillips Exeter, and Phillips Exeter rules.

I'd keep listening to what you have to say, but I also have the best interests of not becoming homicidal at mind, so I won't.

The DaVinci code book sucks :|

I so don't blame you for this.
About time someone did something like it.

DaVinci would be a good fluff reading book, if it wasn't for the fact that the "historical facts" he based the book on are completely false. The idea that scientific fact was repressed and that daVinci was an atheist/agnostic was made up by Voltaire in order to slander the Church (and make himself look good).
</ rant>

Yeeeeeeeah. Sorry, after having to explain to someone for twenty minutes that no, the daVinci sketches we had didn't have any secret codes (when I worked for the Gardner Museum, which already has enough conspiracy theory problems), my urge to beat Dan Brown's head in grew exponentially.

But I won't hold it against you :)

I have to admit this is a redrawing of an old picture I did after listening to Dan Brown on the news.

Museum Employees don't want you to deal with people who suddenly are conviced they're art "experts" because of one idiot writer.

God? More like an imp lacking higher brain function. And english skill.

I'm to foolish to understand what's going on but...
Yay, torture! =D

I've never actually read the DaVinci code so my opinions are somewhat useless when discussing either the book or the film. I do, however, think your art is still brilliant and I'm still wishing I could draw like that.

YAY, finally the madness will stop! If I have to see another one of those shows on the History Channel trying to make the whole thing true I will probably snap in the most violent way possible...but I digress, I really enjoy this pic I almost feel bad for him cause of his cute face in this pic...but he deserves it. Nice one!
